Pigments and dyes for decorative paint

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of colorant is used in wall paint?

Wall paints mainly use water-based pigment dispersions: they are compatible with emulsion, latex and water-borne paint systems without altering the final properties of the coating. Luengo Color manufactures ranges such as Dosytint, Univertint and Luengonyl, developed specifically for point-of-sale tinting systems and for direct in-plant dosing. They are free from VOCs and APEOs, and suitable for EU Ecolabel certification.

Which tinting systems are Luengo Color's colorants compatible with?

Luengo Color's colorants are compatible with point-of-sale (PoS) tinting systems and with industrial Plant Tinting processes. The Dosytint and Univertint ranges are designed for automatic and semi-automatic dispensers. They also offer an open system that can be combined with effect pigments (Luengopearl) or transparent iron oxides (Luengofine) to extend the available colour chart.

What is the difference between a dye and a pigment for paint?

A dye is a soluble substance that colours the medium without remaining in suspension, whereas a pigment is an insoluble particle that stays dispersed within the formulation. Wall paints are mostly coloured with pigments dispersed as pastes or liquid dispersions, as they provide greater opacity, lightfastness and storage stability than conventional dyes.

Are colorants for exterior paint weather-resistant?

Yes. The Lucarex range is designed specifically for exterior applications: it withstands UV radiation, acid rain and extreme weather variations. It is compatible with siloxanes, silicates, cements and long-oil alkyd resins. The pigments selected for this range ensure vivid, long-lasting shades that do not fade over time on façades and wall coatings.

Can a tint be added to white paint without it losing its properties?

Yes. Luengo Color's universal pigment preparations are formulated to blend into white base paints without affecting gloss, drying time or film resistance. The Dosytint range, for example, has been tested in more than 100 types of water-based paint with excellent results. Dosing can be carried out by either weight or volume.
